River and Patty are at that rough point in the relationship every girlfriend runs into. Sure after a fight about Patty's parents River is stuck in a hotel room and Patty's shoveling frozen food into her mouth, but there is nothing more important that keeping love alive. Besides, for as much of a mess they are, not like either of them is a monster.

It would make it so much easier if either of them were monsters. Unfortunately, we are only human.
